About Our Community
Most people use the word “community” to describe where they live. I believe that “community” is a collaboration of shared experiences and shared history. Being a part of something. Whether you are a newcomer or born and raised here, Montanans are very proud of this treasured state and there is a strong sense of warmth and community at every turn.
The Flathead Valley is made up of many quaint towns surrounding Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Part of the Valley lies within the Flathead Indian Reservation and is home to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes. Surrounding the lake are the towns of Polson, Big Arm, Elmo, Dayton, Rollins, Lakeside, Somers, and Bigfork. The larger communities of Kalispell and Columbia Falls sit to the north, while Missoula, home to the University of Montana, is just south of the Flathead Valley. The proximity of Flathead Lake to all of the quaint towns and attractions makes it a great destination pick for vacationers, vacation home buyers, and for people who make the area their fulltime home.
The rich culture and arts in Western Montana can be found within every town. Creative local artists display their treasures in many locations, and art and pottery galleries are plentiful. Visitors and locals alike fill up the theater of the Bigfork Summer Playhouse year after year. The People’s Center in Pablo along Highway 93 is just one of the many places where visitors can learn about the local Native American culture.
Outdoor enthusiasts never tire of the endless activities available in this beautiful neck of the woods! Summertime brings opportunities to enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities, such as paddle boarding, kayaking, boating, fishing, whitewater rafting, sailing, backpacking, and horseback riding. Wintertime is equally beautiful, and adventurers can be found cross country or downhill skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and even taking a horse-drawn sleigh ride. Nearby destinations include Glacier National Park and Whitefish Mountain, as well as Blacktail Mountain.
